Before the Coronavirus epidemic struck and we were all grounded, I was lucky enough to attend The Meetings Space’s Spring event in Abu Dhabi, which took place from 5-8 March. This three-day event is a fantastic opportunity to meet suppliers in the MICE industry and find out the latest hidden gems and hotspots, as well as network with fellow events professionals.

I have visited Dubai before, but was keen to see another city in the United Arab Emirates which I had heard was so very different from Dubai. Abu Dhabi certainly didn’t disappoint.

The capital of the UAE, Abu Dhabi is the second most populous city and also the largest of the seven emirates. The city is a real blend of historic sites, intermixed with 21st century ingenuity. It’s also one of the safest destinations in the world! And with almost year-round sunshine and little rainfall, what’s not to like?!

We flew with Etihad Airways – the national airline of the UAE - from London Heathrow to Abu Dhabi International Airport, the UAE’s second largest airport. Non-stop flights are available with both Etihad and British Airways from Heathrow, Manchester and Dublin.

My base for the duration was The Grand Hyatt Abu Dhabi Hotel and Residences Emirates Pearl, a five-star luxury hotel and events venue. Located in the popular West Corniche district, the hotel’s striking architecture and close proximity to the city’s business hub and high-end shopping districts makes it a popular choice for visitors.

My King room was enormous, with floor to ceiling windows and incredible views of the Arabian Gulf and across to the iconic Emirates Palace.

After settling in, our first organised event on Thursday evening was a drinks and networking supper by the hotel’s fabulous 50m infinity pool.

The next morning, I had lots of really productive one-to-one meetings with hotels, suppliers and destination management companies from around the world. It’s a great chance to find out more about their offerings and build relationships

In the afternoon, we were treated to a tour of the uber-luxury five-star Emirates Palace hotel, which boasts its own pristine private beach and marina. Stunning Arabian interiors, luxurious rooms and suites, award-winning restaurants, spa and beachfront cabanas, combine with legendary five-star service to make this a premium destination.

Afterwards, there was a choice of activities designed to help us get a real taste of what Abu Dhabi has to offer. From speed boat tours, dune bashing, Yas Marina karting and kayaking in the mangroves, to a Pearl Journey Experience and tours of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and Louvre, there was definitely something for everyone. I decided to try out the speed boat tours with the Yellow Boat Tour Company, which proved the perfect way to see Abu Dhabi’s stunning skyline from the water.

Starting at the Emirates Palace, we were taken on an hour-long thrilling ride, taking in a spot of culture at the Heritage Village site, followed by a tour of the 8km Corniche – the middle East’s equivalent to a British seafront, with its attractive pedestrian promenade – before heading out into open water to cruise around the incredible man-made Lulu Island, a mecca for local residents and accessible only by private boat.

Our evening entertainment was provided courtesy of the Ritz Carlton Abu Dhabi Grand Canal. On arrival, we were greeted by a traditional Emirati band playing folk music, before being led out to the hotel’s stunning gardens which overlook the Grand Mosque. Dinner was an incredible buffet with a mixture of cuisines, from traditional Middle Eastern to Japanese, plus a delicious dessert station!

After dinner, we headed back to the Grand Hyatt for an after-party in the Lexx Bar – a sophisticated bar and terrace overlooking the Abu Dhabi corniche. With open bar and live music, we danced the night away!

The next day, I had more one-to-one meetings lined up, before sitting down to enjoy a delicious farewell lunch on the terrace.

In the afternoon, I spent time exploring the city, including the Grand Mosque, which is the largest in the country.

Our final evening in Abu Dhabi was spent at the St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort. Just a few minutes from downtown Abu Dhabi, overlooking a pristine beach and with its own 18-hole golf course, it provides a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. At the Buddha-Bar Beach, we enjoyed a more relaxed, informal evening.

The next morning, bags packed, I headed to the airport for my flight home.

Whilst just a whirlwind trip to Abu Dhabi, I was really impressed with what it had to offer for both business and leisure travellers. I returned home with my little black book full of exciting new contacts and hidden gem destinations to share with the rest of the team.
